Meet the Team: Clive Llewellyn
Can you give us a brief description of your role at Lux Aeterna?
As FX Supervisor, I oversee all FX related content. I am also involved with initial stages such as concepts, ideas, and bidding. My main responsibility involves leading the FX team to ensure we can deliver awe inspiring visuals across a variety of projects. I make sure to meet with the team on a daily basis to discuss upcoming projects and current workloads. We mostly use Houdini in the FX team, as this is industry standard for large simulated pipelines.
What’s your favourite film?
This is such a hard question to answer as I love so many films… but I think I’d have to say James Cameron's Terminator.
What’s your favourite TV show?
Has to be the American office! I’ve watched and rewatched it so many times now I've lost count.
Is there a particular sequence or film that inspired you to go into VFX?
I used to enjoy watching film breakdowns in the bonus features of DVDs as a kid. This is where my main passion for VFX grew. One particular breakdown that inspired me was from Terminator 2.
For me the most iconic scene was when the T-1000 liquifies into chrome and passes through the iron rails before manifesting itself whole once more. The gun he was holding got snagged on the other side which was a lovely touch. I was blown away and had to learn how this was achieved.
To achieve such an effect Stan Winston’s Creature company had to partner with Industrial Light and Magic under FX Supervisor Dennis Murnen. Here they used a mixture of laser scanning the actor Rovert Patrick to recreate a digital double. They study the actors' movements, facial expressions, and form. This combined with revolutionary morphing technology that they developed, made this scene what it is today.
