Introducing RENO: a short film production from Lux Aeterna
We’ve been busy working away behind the scenes on our very own film, RENO. This sci-fi short is set in a dystopian future and explores humanity’s relationship with artificial intelligence. The project is heavily involved with the MyWorld program as our Creative Director, and Director of RENO, Rob Hifle explains below.
Lately, we’ve been immersed in experimenting with the MyWorld virtual production stage and pushing the boundaries of emerging technologies – exploring how they integrate into film workflows, both practically and ethically. From real-time photorealistic Unreal environments to refining VFX asset detail on the LED volume, every step has been an interrogation of process and possibility – practically, creatively, and ethically.
There is a lot of tech involved with filming in a virtual studio as well as technicians, so costs and time can spiral out of control very quickly if you haven’t got a clear understanding of what is possible.
There are some truly amazing benefits from using an LED volume but it also comes with a plethora of caveats, it’s definitely not one shoe fits all. Understanding where it works for you and where it doesn’t is all part of the VP learning experience.
We've been very fortunate to work closely with DoP Louie Blystad Collins, experimenting with some of his antique prime lenses which interestingly softens the divide between foreground elements and the LED volume. These approaches are imperative when wanting a believably integrated and harmonious scene.
Over the last six months, I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with writer Abiola Ogunbiyi (Idris Elba’s Green Door Productions/Ebony Life for Netflix) on the concept and script for the twenty-minute live action short.
So, why all the prep?
We’re gearing up for our first short film RENO, which is scheduled to shoot this April and May. The sci-fi short is the brainchild of our collaboration with MyWorld – funded by the UKRI.
RENO is an exploration of our future relationships with artificial machines, where autonomy improves in unpredictable ways and leads to a synopsis where its goals diverge from our own human interests. It seems we are edging ever closer to a scenario where we are no longer in control of our destinies. It’s been a tumultuous time navigating the ever changing AI landscape so it felt equally important and significant to engage in a story about an Artificial General Intelligence.
It is important to note that Lux Aeterna has been leading the way on the usage of closed and open generative AI models. As part of a RENO case study we have been working closely with Senior Lecturers at University of West Of England on IP law, investigating the ethics and legal implications of using Gen AI. This document will be made public soon and is intended to educate and essentially safeguard our VFX community.
As everyone is very much aware it’s been a tumultuous time in the film industry and more specifically in VFX. We’ve sadly lost some major studios over the last couple of years. With uncertainty looming over so many in the film industry, being able to bring a story to life, at this time, feels more meaningful than ever. To be able to pour my heart into this project and to see it take shape is something I don’t take for granted.—every moment on set, every collaboration, and every frame captured is a reminder of why we do this in the first place. To those still pushing forward despite the downturn, we see you, and we’re grateful to be part of this resilient community.
I just want to take a moment to reflect on the privilege of directing this film—a true labour of love. Storytelling is part of our DNA at Lux Aeterna. To mix this with the latest emerging tech innovation is an amazing opportunity, it really feels like the stars have aligned. Every step has been driven by passion, dedication, and the unwavering support from the MyWorld crew as well as an incredible team of producers, artists and technicians.
As RENO moves through pre-production, post is set for Summer and Autumn, with screeners planned for late 2025, and I can’t wait to share more news with you in upcoming months.
