Build the foundations of a successful project with a VFX masterclass at Lux Aeterna

In 2024, our Executive Producer, Emma Kolasinska, introduced VFX masterclasses to educate and onboard clients during pre-production. These sessions help clients streamline workflows and ensure budgets are maximised for the screen. Emma shares why efficient planning and a strong understanding of VFX processes are essential to project success.

With a background in broadcast, I know all too well the disconnect between production and VFX. Many producers and directors don’t understand how we work or our terminology. It’s not something taught in film school, and the information isn’t always available in easy-to-digest ways.

I've found that when production teams know even a little about VFX, they become more creative, ask better questions, and prepare more effectively. Encouraging these conversations has helped projects run more calmly and smoothly because we’re all working from the same foundation. Last-minute commissioning decisions can blow a studio's budget, but when productions I’ve worked with involve their VFX vendor from the start, they save time and money in the long run. Planning is key.

In my experience, the best time to run a VFX masterclass is at the start of a project to ensure best practices are in place and that everyone understands which approach works best for their production and budget. That said, even when a project is already underway, these sessions provide knowledge that filmmakers can use throughout their careers.

A great example is our 2024 project with BBC Studios for the series Solar System. I led a masterclass with the production team, empowering them in pre-production planning and decision-making. It opened up a channel of trust and communication that helped the whole production move more smoothly.

Emma kindly ran a masterclass on VFX workflow for our team, which was very beneficial…(they) were very much part of the team, they were hugely invested in the project… I always felt they understood the importance of bringing the budget in on track and we ended up bang on!

I’ve seen first-hand how these sessions benefit filmmakers, not just for the project they’re currently working on but for the rest of their careers. I run both general and bespoke sessions, depending on the pipeline we’re working within. I’m always surprised when people hesitate to ask questions, especially since, as producers, we’re taught from day one to seek clarity. But I’m always happy to see how many people want to learn.

I’ve led masterclasses for major broadcasters and production companies across a wide range of projects. If you’re a client of ours and would like to learn more, get in touch to find out how a masterclass could benefit your team.
